Yigit Pura’s Bulletproof Coffee

“I feel more alert. I’m satisfied by a lesser amount of food. I can finally avoid a good amount of the sugary treats that I’m surrounded by all day. Not that I would ever want to avoid all of the treats….”
Coffee is the reason why I wake up in the morning. As someone who works long hours, coffee keeps me sane. Caffeine rejuvenates me. But it’s more than just a functional food. Coffee is from nature, so the way it’s treated from soil to cup matters. And so I’m grateful to live in San Francisco, home to many a great cup of coffee. People here consider the bean, the roasting of the bean and the grind. They even think about the people who grow the coffee – always buy equal exchange beans!
My Kind of Coffee…
When it comes to coffee, I really am a “just right” kind of guy. Too dark of a roast and it tastes ashy and smoky; too light and a grassy, hay flavor arises. For me, the perfect cup of coffee is a supple, medium-bodied, mouthful roast. My favorite spot in San Francisco to get my perfect cup of coffee is the Mr. Espresso Coffee Bar. Created in 1976 by an Italian immigrant attempting to bring true espresso to the states, Mr. Espresso has brought to light the importance of compassion and attention to detail in regards to roasting coffee. Every time I visit, I’ll order my usual roast over oakwood and watch as an employee prepares my coffee with the utmost care. This is what I call Nirvana – my Yigit Pura special. You can read more about them here.
On the topic of coffee, I recently discovered the concept of “bulletproof” through Jordan Bach, when I met him for an event in New York. Jordan introduced me to bulletproof coffee. It’s a mixture of brewed coffee, grass-fed butter and coconut oil. Simple, quick, and able to be recreated at home. I’ve made it my morning cup along with a green smoothie – I’m a hippie – it not only satiates my hunger, but keeps me awake. It’s a bit of an acquired taste, but I was hooked by the end of the first week.
Since then, I’ve done my own research on this elixir, realizing its health benefits. The butter from grass-fed cows provides Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The coconut oil is medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil; mixed with caffeine, it becomes a super food. The possible benefits include improved brain function, fat loss, and reduced cravings. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t make those claims. What I do know is how bulletproof coffee affects me: I feel more alert. I’m satisfied by a lesser amount of food. I can finally avoid a good amount of the sugary treats that I’m surrounded by all day. Not that I would ever want to avoid all of the treats….
The recipe for bulletproof coffee is pretty simple, and with the help of a high-powered blender – I use a Magic Bullet – it can be made in under 5 minutes:
Yigit Pura’s Bulletproof Coffee Recipe:
- 1 cup (8 ounces) fresh brewed coffee (hot)
- 2 Tablespoons Strauss Farms Butter from Grass-Fed Cows
- 2 Tablespoons Raw, Organic Coconut Oil
- Combine all ingredients in a blender
- Mix for 1 full minute to completely emulsify
- Enjoy on an empty stomach, before your breakfast
I know it’s a strange notion to have coffee with butter and oil. Doesn’t that sound crazy? In reality, it’s no crazier than putting cream in your coffee. We all need to stop being afraid of fats. Some fats, like the ones in grass fed butter and coconut oil are good fats, and are essential towards helping our bodies to process nutrients and vitamins. Good fats are brain food! Just remember – moderation is key.
